What is Gold Panning?
Gold panning is using a gold pan to get gold from a
stream or river. Gold Panning is a great way to start
recreational gold mining because it will teach you the
basics of what gold looks like, where to find it, and it
requires very little investment.

Gold Panning Instructions
First fill the gold pan about 3/4 of the way full. Dip the
pan in the water to allow the gold pan to fill up with
water. Give the pan a few gentle shakes from side to
side. Next gently move the pan in a circular motion.
Initially you will want to be careful not to allow the dirt
and gravel to wash over the side of the pan. Once the
material has made a few circles then the gold will have
settled to the bottom and you can start to allow the
lighter sand on the top to spill over the edge of the pan.
You may notice that the water will get cloudy as the clay
dissolves in the water and gets washed out. This is fine.
Also larger rocks will work their way to the top of the gold
pan. These can be removed once you are sure that no
gold or clay is still on the rocks.
Now tilt the pan downward a bit. With the pan facing
downward the dirt and gravel will definitely start washing
over the edge of the gold pan. The lighter material on
the top gets washed out while the gold, because it is
heavy and dense, will sink to the bottom of the gold pan.
Keep gently washing the dirt out of the gold pan. Add
water by dipping the edge of the gold pan in as needed.
You can also level the gold pan from time to time and give
it a few good shakes to help the gold resettle at the
bottom of the pan. Repeat this process until the lighter
colored sand has just about all been washed away and
you are just left with the heavier black sand.
Once you just have black sand, and hopefully gold,
remaining you use the same procedure as before
however you have to slow down a bit more and take your
time. Light weight sand and rocks can be panned
through quickly. The black sand has to be panned out
more slowly. Note that when you have reduced your
original material to mostly black sand and gold it is called
concentrate. You might not be able to separate the black
sand completely from the fine gold with a gold pan when
you are first learning. If nothing else you can suck up the
gold and black sand with a sucker bottle and store the
concentrate in a vial. We will have a lesson later on that
is focused on cleaning up your concentrate and getting
just the gold.
Happy Panning!

What Do I Need To Start?
To start gold panning only a gold pan is absolutely
required. To find gold at a creek or river you will also
need to be in a gold bearing area, though for practice you
can pan just about anywhere with a gold pan and a tub
of water. For practice you can use real gold, BBs, lead
shot, or small fishing weights. Remember that gold
panning works because gold is so heavy, so any practice
targets need to be heavy.
The best way to practice is to use real gold because then
not only will you get your panning technique down but
you will also see what gold looks like. Once you have
seen real gold in your pan you will not easily be "fooled"
by fool's gold. You can get a complete practice kit that
includes real gold as well as everything else you need to
